ACTION NEEDED: Doubling down to stop Corridor H

Our fight to stop the “Highway to Nowhere” is shifting into high gear as West Virginia highway officials deploy bogus legal maneuvers in an attempt to thwart our lawsuit and avoid accountability for the damage their Corridor H would cause the environment and rural communities.

As you recall, the Stewards of the Potomac Highlands and Virginia Wilderness Committee took a giant step in our decades-long fight against Corridor H when we filed a federal lawsuit on April 30 to stop the last stretch of this wasteful, destructive, unneeded four-lane highway. We knew it was classic “David vs Goliath,” but felt we had no choice. This seven-mile highway would:

• Draw tourists away from downtown Wardensville, W.Va. and threaten the town’s water supply;

• Cut a huge swath through 2.4-miles of old growth forest in the George Washington National Forest;

• Pollute native brook trout streams and other sensitive wildlife habitat; and

• Degrade popular recreation resources in the Big Schloss natural area.

The Virginia Wilderness Committee and Stewards of the Potomac Highlands are standing up for our members, who include people like you – homeowners, farmers, and local businesses who would be directly harmed by the highway, as well as trout anglers, hikers, birders, hunters, and other naturalists whose enjoyment of public lands would be impaired.

Our attorneys are working hard to halt construction from Wardensville to the Virginia line, but we fully expect the highway agencies to continue putting up legal roadblocks. Thanks to your generosity, we have raised $20,000 to cover legal costs so far; we need another $40,000 by September 30 to stay in the game.
